Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds. Small parrots with a variety of colour patterns and a crest, they are attractive as well as friendly and easy to tame. Because of their small size, cockatiel care and taming is easier than some other parrot species. They are capable of mimicking speech, although they can be difficult to understand. However, they are quite good at whistling and can often be taught to whistle tunes.
So you think you’ll get a cockatiel !
Before I tell you all the great things about owning a cockatiel I am going to tell you the not so great things that people never mention or don’t think about. First off you need toknow that a cockatiel can live as long (if not longer ) than a dog or cat. They are noisy and messy so it’s not a good idea to get one if you are really house proud (droppings, food scattered everywhere, feathers and dust). Cockatiels need free flight outside the cage everyday. They need lot’s of attention and if you don’t give your tiel the love and attention he/she deserves they could develop behaviour problems . Cockatiels are very vocal, males more than females, and if you don’t tame and gain their trust life could be unpleasant for both you and your tiel. Also you need to know that they chew everything in sight from cables, wallpaper, furniture is you need to remove anything in the room where your tiel will be that’s is dangerous or hazards (see cockatiel care page)
Now on to the good points, you’ll probably find that owning a cockatiel is worth all the work and time. Your cleaning time and care can result in one of the most satisfying companions you’re ever likely to know. With a cockatiel you get more than you could ever expect. They are a common pet, with an uncommon ability to steal your heart and become a real member of your family. Cockatiels love company. Mine will go anywhere with me including the shower (turned on low power and not hot). She will send hours playing games, cuddling up and having her head scratched. It can take a long time to tame your cockatiel so you need a lot of patience.
